SACRAMENTO - The state Senate narrowly passed a $99 billion budget Saturday night that would raise taxes on California drivers and smokers to deal with the state's gaping $23.6 billion deficit.

Senate approval sends the budget blueprint to the Assembly, where lawmakers are expected to be in session this afternoon -- one day before the start of the new fiscal year.

Im gonna try and be an OptiMist here .. and sing an Ol' song..

99 Billion Bottles of Beer on the Wall 99 Billion bottles of Beer,, Take 1 doown and Pass It 'Round, 98,999,999,999 Bottles on the Wall..

That sentiment was echoed by Sen. John Vasconcellos, D-San Jose, who said the budget was ``not a proud one, but it's the least bad we could get,'' adding ``the health cuts will hurt a lot of people that don't have much now.''

the plan expands a health insurance plan for poor children to include their parents, starting in October

Uh boy, they slashed all kinds of things, but they found the money for a new entitlement. Creeping universal state-funded insurance.

The rats have previously defined the rich at the national level to mean anyone who makes more than 50k per year. How have they defined poor children in California?

I like your screen name, NR. Sounds like you're a man who would agree that it's time to take a little action on this -- starting with the easiest target: the tobacco tax.

Smokers, Fight Back!

Why Let California Soak You For Discriminatory Tobacco Taxes?

Low Prices, High Quality And No Taxes Are As Close And Easy As Your Telephone, Fax, Mailbox Or Computer!

I've done business with the following online/mail order companies for about 3 years. They're all rock-solid. They save me about $2k/year on my smoking costs. They are respectively in North Carolina, Ohio, Massachusetts and Illinois, so there are no state taxes on anything and California gets completely cut out of the deal. I spend anywhere from 80 cents to $1.20 per pack, depending on what I'm rolling. Takes me 10-15 minutes each morning to crank out a pack. Or you can do it in the evening while you watch the news on FNC.

The quality of these tobaccos and papers is way beyond anything sold in a pack. Never stale and not a trace of harshness. Also, the cigarette goes out if you put it down for more than about a minute (no chemicals to keep it burning), so it doesn't burn down in the ashtray.

Print out or photocopy this info and give it to everyone you know who smokes. Make extra copies for them to give out to their smoking friends. None of them needs to be online. They can order by mail, phone or fax is they want. It's time to stop letting ourselves get soaked by the state taxman!

Mark Ryan sells about 7 different cigarette tobaccos and will gladly send you free samples of all of them (phone them), so you can try before you buy -- enough of each variety to roll up a pack. My favorites are American Gold (mild Virginia), Ramback (authentic Turkish) and Old Timer (a very nice chip-cut). They also have a menthol blend that you can mix with other tobaccos if you like. If you want to roll out filter kings, get one of their 78 mm hand rollers and a half dozen extra belts (the seams fail after a few months).

If you like a "European" style tobacco, Carey's has Peter Stokkabye #93 Amsterdam Shag in the 10.6 oz. tin @ $14.65 (or 3 tins @ $41.76). I have yet to meet anybody who doesn't like this tobacco.

Larry Lynn is a gem. He ordinarily caters to the cigar crowd, but is very nice about helping us cigarette types. Call him at the toll-free number and tell him a guy online told you he got the following prices and you'd like to follow suit.

Rayo cigarette filter plugs, 25 bags (200 plugs per bag) @ $37.50 + $6 shpg.

"Smoking" (brand name) De Luxe extra-thin rice papers, 100 books (50 leaves per book) @ $82.50 + $6 shpg. (These 78 mm papers are just the best.)

Ziggymart

John offers the 5-pound tub of "Turkish Special" (the real thing from Turkish monopoly, same distributor) @ $59.95 plus $7 shipping. This is the best price I've seen for this great little tobacco. Since he does business in Massachusetts, he has to be more careful than others, so he asks that you fax him a color xerox of your current driver's license with your first order. This is to ensure that he's not set up and busted for selling to a minor. You can black out any non-essential info on the copy of your license.

Looks like New York is trying to compete with Kookifornia.

The taxes in New York on cigarettes are increased tomorrow. Making a pack of cigarettes over $7.50!

It's time for smokers to wake up and stop paying into the state coffers! Let the Mayors and the Governors pull the money for the budget out of their fat a$$es!!

Oh man. Tags were costing my wife and I over $1200 a year before we left that state. I can only imagine what they will cost now. Probably something like $800 to $1000 a year. Just for tags so you can drive on the roads. Wow!

I've been gone from California for a year and a half now. Still not missing it at all.

Holy Hemmroids, $7.50 a pack. Smokers ought to march on the statehouse and find a new use for their lighters. I wonder what a burning zippo would do inserted in........ahhh, better not go there

Hi Steve!

ABC did a piece on the news tonight about cigarette taxes being raised by that SOB RINO Bloomberg and the price increase goes into effect tomorrow. Making cigarettes in New York over $7.50 a pack. Can you imagine? The gall of that RINO. I can't stand these people.

In a bind aren't we. Ya can't trust the RINO's to do the right thing and the dims are probably worse. Looks like I'm joining the "none of the above" party. My state went easy on us, just 50 cents a pack.
Just checked an in state mail order place that had some pretty good deals, they aren't allowed to sell in their own state, lol.
Wish they'd hurry up and go after the Big Mac crew, don't think we smokers can fund this government on our own for long. God Bless Big Brother

Davis is toast. I would love to see far more Democrats lose power in CA.
Any chance of picking up other important seats this year?

Any child without a computer and games, two TV sets.. not three, maybe one step down from designer sneakers.

To clarify: We were spending $1200 a year on tags for both of our cars. Now that is probably going to be $800 to $1000 a year for each car, totaling as much as $2k a year, for the privilege of being stuck in traffic jams 24/7.

So far I like eastern Washington, I just wish we could get a conservative government in this state. However, compared to Grayout Davis, our own Governor Gary Gridlocke looks like Cato the Elder!

I can't blame anybody for trying to avoid taxes on the tobacco.

Most of the upper 2% whose income taxes will be raised are also called "EMPLOYERS"!
In the end I think that will also have a bad effect on the job market and economy here as employers feel frustrated here in California.

The tit for money losing silicon valley companies was suspended for two years. Ain't that special? I didn't know that my tax dollars were going to dotcomers, and that strikes me as one of the nuttiest ideas out there. If they can get a subsidy, why can't lawyers get one so that their base income won't fall below 200K per year? After all, well paid lawyers are needed to assist in insuring that the pie is shared fairly by all.
